Education Support Splits Between Schools and Early Learning

Two different jobs sit under the same heading here, and picking the wrong one costs you a year. School support means working beside a teacher in a classroom, usually with the students who need extra help. Early childhood means a centre or a preschool, with younger children and longer days. The tracked role is teachers' aide work. Employers ran about 1,600 ads for it during June 2026, and hiring sits holding close to last year's level. Every course below comes from Open Colleges. Each one carries supervised placement in a real classroom or centre, so you find out early whether the work suits you.

Are these jobs in demand?

Aide work doesn't boom and it doesn't crash. Schools budget for support staff a year at a time, so the hiring follows enrolments and funding rather than the wider economy. Employers posted about 1,600 teachers' aide roles through June 2026, and that figure is holding close to last year's level. Steady is the honest word for it. The practical upside is that vacancies appear all year, especially at the start of terms and whenever somebody goes on leave. The practical catch is that a lot of these roles are part time or term time, which suits some households and doesn't suit others at all.

Where is this heading?

The ten year view is modest but positive. The occupation covers about 135,000 people nationally, and official projections carry that group up 9.7% over the decade, which adds about 13,000 more by 2035. That growth follows student numbers and the steady expansion of support for children with additional needs, so it doesn't hang on one state or one funding round. It describes the occupation and not your application, which is worth keeping in mind. What it does mean is that schools will keep needing aides across the next decade. The people who already hold a finished certificate, with placement behind it, tend to get called first.

Is there a shortage?

No shortage is recorded against aide work for 2025. The ratings also covered integration aides, preschool aides and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education workers, and none of those came back short either. Schools are filling these positions, so you would be applying on ordinary terms. In this field the thing that separates applicants is usually the placement. A principal or a centre director wants to know you have already stood in a room full of children and coped. A finished placement is the cleanest proof of that.

What gets you in, and where it goes

One qualification is on record for this work, and it is CHC30221, the Certificate III in School Based Education Support. That qualification took 19,490 enrolments in 2024. It is the school support course below. The early childhood route carries a different code, the Cert III in Early Childhood Education, and it points at centres and preschools instead of classrooms. The third listing is a Diploma of Early Childhood Education, and it goes deeper on the theory side of early learning than the certificate route does. Placement is the common thread. All of them put you in a real setting before you finish, and that is where plenty of people are offered their first job.

Quick answers

Before you enquire

What's the difference between school support and early childhood?

Setting and age group. School support puts you in a classroom beside a teacher, often with students who need extra help. Early childhood means a centre or preschool with younger children, longer days and a different qualification code. Choose the setting first, then the course.

Do I need placement, and how does it work?

Yes, every course here includes supervised placement, and you complete it in a real school or centre on top of your study blocks. Open Colleges explains the current arrangements when you enquire, since the hours and the setting vary by course and by state.

Can I work as a teachers' aide without a degree?

That's the norm rather than the exception. Aide roles are built on vocational qualifications instead of teaching degrees, and the one on record is a Cert III. A degree is the route to teaching itself, which is a different job with different training behind it.

Are all three courses nationally recognised?

Not all of them. The two certificates carry national training codes. The Diploma of Early Childhood Education doesn't appear on the register. It teaches the material without a code an employer can verify, and in regulated settings that matters.

What are the hours like?

Much of this work is part time or tied to school terms, which suits some households and not others. Centres tend to run longer days across the year instead. Ask about the placement schedule when you enquire. These were all current as at August 2026.
