Two Ways Into Finance Work, Accounts or Office Management

Finance work divides more cleanly than most fields. On one side sits the ledger, which means reconciling, payroll and the accounts themselves. On the other sits the money side of running a business. That's where office managers live, holding budgets and reporting and the numbers somebody has to answer for. Employers listed about 1,000 office manager roles in June 2026, and bookkeeping added about 410 more. The course below takes the business route rather than the accounting one. It's a nationally recognised Certificate IV in Business with a finance focus, and it runs online through Open Colleges.

Are these jobs in demand?

Neither of these is a high volume market, and that's worth saying plainly. Office manager roles drew about 1,000 ads during June 2026, and that was down 8.6% from a year earlier. Bookkeeping drew about 410, and that was down 19.8% from a year earlier. Together they came to 1,413 across a single month, which is small beside general clerical work and reflects how specialised these jobs are. Specialised markets behave differently from broad ones. Fewer roles come up, and the ones that do often ask for somebody who can start without much training, which is precisely what a qualification is for.

Where is this heading?

Office managers number about 135,000 across the country, and the ten year projection takes that up 8.4% over the decade, which is about 11,500 extra positions by 2035. Bookkeepers count about 88,500. Their projection runs up 5.9% over the decade, and that is another about 5,200 people. Neither of those is a dramatic climb, and neither one needs to be. Both occupations are already large, so even a modest percentage on that base puts thousands of extra desks into the market across a decade. Steady tends to beat spectacular when the move itself takes months of study first.

Is there a shortage?

Both occupations were checked for the 2025 ratings, and both came back with no shortage. That answers a fair question before you enrol. Nobody is going to hire you because the market is desperate, because on these figures it isn't. What gets you hired in finance work is trust. Trust gets built out of visible things. A qualification with a code behind it, software you can name and use, and a clear reason for wanting the money side of a business.

What gets you in, and where it goes

This is where the two routes actually separate. The recorded entry qualification here is the Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, listed under FNS40222, and 27,105 people took it up in 2024. That's the accounts specialist route, and it goes deep on the ledger. The course below is the other one. It's a Certificate IV in Business carrying a finance stream, so it teaches the money side inside a general business qualification. It opens toward the Diploma of Business rather than toward accounting practice. Choose the accounts route if the ledger is the destination. Choose the business route if you want finance to sit alongside running things.

Quick answers

Before you enquire

What's the difference between finance and accounting courses?

Accounting qualifications train you for the ledger itself and sit inside the financial services training package. The business route below teaches finance as part of running an organisation, so budgets and reporting come bundled with general business units.

Is finance work still hiring?

Modestly, and the two occupations moved differently. Office manager ads moved down 8.6% from a year earlier in June 2026, while bookkeeping moved down 19.8% from a year earlier. Both groups are projected to grow across the decade, so the short term is tighter than the long term.

Do I need to be good at maths?

You need to be comfortable with arithmetic and careful with detail, which isn't the same as being good at advanced maths. Most of the work is accuracy, process, and knowing roughly what a number should look like before you check it.

Is the course below nationally recognised?

Yes. It's a Certificate IV in Business with a finance focus, delivered online by Open Colleges, and it carries a national code. Other providers recognise that code, which matters if you step up to a diploma later on.

Where does this lead if I keep studying?

The busiest next rung is the Diploma of Business, which drew 28,580 enrolments in 2024. Plenty of people work for a while first and study it later, once an employer is helping with the cost. Open Colleges had it listed in August 2026.
