About The Course

Help Protect Australia's Most Vulnerable Children and Families

Do you feel called to protect children, support struggling families, and work on the front line of one of Australia's most important sectors? Are you looking for a career where your work genuinely changes outcomes for young people who need someone in their corner? Australia's child protection, family intervention, and youth services sectors need more skilled, qualified practitioners, and the CHC40321 Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention is the right qualification that can get you there.

This is a nationally recognised qualification that gives you the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to work effectively with children, young people, and families experiencing vulnerability, trauma, or crisis. This qualification includes the latest child protection legislation, trauma-informed practice frameworks, and culturally safe approaches.

Throughout your studies, you will develop practical competency across the key areas of this profession:

  • Trauma-informed and strengths-based practice: Build the skills to support children, young people, and families experiencing complex trauma and attachment difficulties, using approaches grounded in current research and best practice.
  • Child protection and risk response: Learn to identify and report children and young people at risk, working within legal, ethical, and organisational frameworks to keep young people safe.
  • Family intervention and service planning: Develop and facilitate individual service plans that address the needs of children, families, and communities, including in intensive family preservation and out-of-home care settings.
  • Cultural safety and inclusion: Apply culturally safe, inclusive, and responsive practices across diverse communities, including when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
  • Collaborative safe environments: Work as part of a professional team to maintain environments that are genuinely safe for children and young people across a range of service contexts.

You will also develop strong capabilities in communication, domestic and family violence response, parenting education, and responsible behaviour support, giving you a broad and practical skill set that translates directly into the workplace.

Across Australia, demand for qualified child and family intervention workers is growing. Increased investment in early intervention, ongoing reform of out-of-home care systems, and the expansion of community-based family services are all creating new positions for trained practitioners. From government departments and NGOs to residential care providers and family hubs, there are pathways across the country for graduates of this qualification.
