Sharing is caring!

It takes a special kind of person to dedicate a lifetime of work for the benefit of others. If you need any advice in starting out, we’re here for you.

If you don’t know how to begin, or where to look for a job, or what you need to get started, all you need to do is remember the following 5 tips:
1. Ask Yourself if Other Jobs Seem Fulfilling?

Stop and think about how you’d feel in other jobs. Would they be as meaningful to you as something in community service? Or do you think you’d get bored or frustrated, feeling trapped in a job you don’t think fulfils you as a person?

While you might need a job, you need to make sure that your job also addresses your other needs. If you’re a creative person, you’ll need an outlet for your creativity – making jobs in art or writing good fits for you. If you’re a friendly person who’s always networking, then PR positions might be a good match.

So, it only makes sense that if you’re a kind-hearted, caring person, you’ll want a job that fills your need to care for others. If no other jobs can address this need of yours as well as community service can, then you already know what your best option is.

2. Figure Out Why You Care so Much.

Reflect on why you feel all this concern for other people. Is it because you were raised in a family full of volunteers? Or maybe you had a rough past, and now that you’re past it, you’d like to help others too? There are a lot of reasons why you could go into support work. In fact, you might find yourself identifying with some of the reasons in this post.

Whatever your reasons might be, you want to make sure you enter this line of work for the right ones. If, for example, you plan on entering community service to make a profit, you probably won’t end up very happy. But if you have reasons that address something that is truly part of your personality, then you’ll find support work extremely fulfilling.

3. Think About Who You Want to Help the Most.

Now that you know why community service, counselling, and other support works are good for you, you’ll need to figure out who you’d like to help out the most. While it’s noble to want to help as many people as possible, you’ll have to understand that different people have different needs, and that you’re better off specialising in helping the people who you feel you could impact the most.

If, for example, you’re really interested in helping out young people at risk, then you’ll want to enter Youth Work If you have a soft spot for the differently-abled or for people with difficult families, you might want to enter Community Services. If you’d like to assist drug addicts, alcoholics, compulsive gamblers, or other people with mental problems, then entering Counselling might do you some good.

It’s all about choosing who you think could use your help the most.

4. Check out Job Openings in Community Centres or Online

So you’ve determined why you want to help people, and you know who you want to help. The next step to finding that perfect job is to check for openings that match both of your preferences. Many community centres will have job listings posted on boards. You could also simply ask administration if they have any jobs that need filling.

Another way to find community service work is to search online. There are a lot of local websites, like seek.com.au, that can help connect you with support jobs. If all else fails, Google is your friend. All you really need to do is search for the kind of job you’re looking for and your location, and the rest will follow.

5. Get Qualified

Of course, you can’t always just walk into a job (though if you do, congratulations!). Community service work is very serious; you need to make sure that the kind of help you provide doesn’t actually do more damage than good. You need to know what you’re doing.

That’s why it’s always best to do some studying.

If possible, take a vocational course in Community Service Work or something related. Not only will you get the skills you need to provide the right kind of care, but you’ll also receive qualifications that will help you get hired more easily.
