IT Support Technicians Gain Ground Over the Next Decade

Support is the tier that keeps an organisation running, and it's the usual first job in technology. Technicians set up the hardware, they fix what breaks, and they talk people through the problem while they do it. Hiring for support technician roles produced about 850 ads during June 2026, and that pace is holding close to last year's level. Look further out and the picture opens up, because official projections take the occupation up 17.4% over the decade. All 10 courses below come from one provider, Upskilled, and they run online. The real choice you're making is which stream to study rather than which college to pick.

Are these jobs in demand?

Advertising for support technicians came in at about 850 through June 2026, and the trend there is holding close to last year's level. It's a modest monthly count next to the size of the occupation, which tells you these roles turn over slowly once people are in them. Steady isn't the same as stagnant either. The decade ahead is where this field does its moving, and the outlook further on carries about 13,000 extra positions. So the sensible read is a market that hires consistently rather than in waves, and one that gets bigger while it does it.

Where is this heading?

The long view is the confident part here. The occupation employs about 75,000 people across Australia, and the official projection carries that group up 17.4% over the decade. It's an extra about 13,000 technicians before 2035. Growth like that usually reflects how much more of an organisation now runs on systems somebody has to keep working. A projection covers the occupation and not any individual, so treat it as the direction of travel. What it suggests is that support work should still be a reasonable place to land in a decade's time.

Is there a shortage?

Employers weren't reported short of technicians in 2025. Hardware technicians, customer support officers, web administrators and the general support category were each rated, and none of them registered a shortage. So you'd be applying on ordinary terms, without scarcity working in your favour. In IT that's a fair fight, because the field lets you show evidence more easily than most. A certificate proves the ground you covered, and anything you've built, fixed or configured yourself proves you'll actually do the work.

What gets you in, and where it goes

The register keeps this simple. There are two rungs, and the first is ICT30120. That's the Certificate III in Information Technology, and it pulled 17,260 enrolments nationally during 2024. Above it sits the Cert IV in the same subject. What the courses below do with those two codes is the interesting part. The Cert III comes in cloud computing, cyber security, programming and web development versions, and the Cert IV adds networking and systems administration on top. Same qualification, different specialisation. Pick the stream that matches the work you want, because that choice shapes your first job more than the certificate number does.

Quick answers

Before you enquire

Which stream should I choose?

Pick by the work, not the label. Cyber security and cloud suit people who like systems and rules, while programming and web development suit people who like building things. Support roles hire from all of them, so no stream closes a door.

Do I need a degree to work in IT?

Not for support work. It's one of the few technical fields where a certificate plus demonstrable skill gets you interviewed. Degrees matter more further up in engineering and architecture roles, and plenty of people study those later while employed.

Are all the listings nationally recognised?

Nearly all of them. Out of 10 listings, 9 carry a national training code. The exception is a cyber security bootcamp, which teaches the skills without a code attached, so it works better as an add-on than as your only credential.

Should I start at Cert III or Cert IV?

Cert III suits you if IT is new ground, and it drew 17,260 enrolments in 2024, so employers read it easily. The Cert IV fits people already working with systems who want the qualification to catch up.

Can I study this while working full time?

That's the usual arrangement. Every listing here is delivered online through one provider, so you set the pace around your hours. Upskilled confirms current intakes, fees and payment options when you enquire, and all 10 were open in August 2026.
