Where is this heading?

All three occupations head the same way over the next ten years, and the scale is the part worth pausing on. The carer line already numbers about 370,000, and the projection takes it up 18.1% over the decade, and it brings about 67,000 extra people into that line by 2035. Personal care and nursing support sit at about 115,000 now, and that group is projected up 24.7% over the decade, which is the fastest climb of the three. Disability services officers count about 96,500, and their projection is up 11.9% over the decade. A projection speaks about a whole occupation and not about you personally. Growth spread this evenly usually means entry level openings for years rather than months.

Is there a shortage?

The 2025 ratings don't treat the three the same way. Aged and disabled carers are the exception, and they hold a national shortage rating, which is the strongest signal on this page. Employers across the country are telling the government those roles are hard to fill. The other two titles aren't rated short. Disability services officers and personal care workers get hired the ordinary way, where your qualification and your placement history do the separating. If you want the clearest run at a first job, the carer side is where the rating points.

What gets you in, and where it goes

One qualification does most of the work in this field. The busiest rung by a distance is the Certificate III in Individual Support, which the register lists as CHC33021. Enrolments in it hit 101,140 during 2025, and nothing else across the 38 qualifications in this ladder comes near that. Upskilled offers exactly that certificate below, with an ageing and disability focus. Open Colleges sits a step above it with a Cert IV in Disability, and that one adds supervised placement hours. Online Learning Institute supplies the third listing. It's a short certificate, and the national register doesn't carry it, so treat it as skill building rather than a credential. Start where your time allows, and let the work tell you when to move up.
