Demystifying the Role of a Radiographer

What does a Radiographer do?

  • Operating X-ray, CT, and MRI Machines: First and foremost, radiographers are hands-on healthcare professionals who operate advanced imaging machines. This might include standard X-ray machines or more advanced scanners used in CT (Computed Tomography) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging).

Laying Out the Path to Becoming a Radiographer

Academic Requirements

Most countries require a radiographer to hold at least a bachelor's degree in medical imaging, radiologic science, or a related field. High school students interested in pursuing this career path might want to prioritise classes in biology, physics, and mathematics, which offer a solid foundation for this field. 

Bachelor's Degree

The bachelor’s programme typically spans four years and focuses on anatomy, patient care, radiation physics, image evaluation, and procedures.

Master’s Degree 

While not always required, a master’s degree can lead to career advancement. Degree programmes might focus on management and education, radiologist assistant programmes, or specialised imaging techniques. 

Hands-on Training

Most degree programmes incorporate practical training as a major component, offering students hands-on experience with medical imaging technology under the supervision of experienced radiographers or radiologic technologists. This real-world experience is a crucial part of the training process.

Certification

After completing their academic study and practical training, aspiring radiographers must take and pass the certification exam offered by the relevant professional body in their country. This might be the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in the U.S., for example. Certification not only confirms a professional's competence in radiography but also improves job prospects and can lead to higher pay.

Exploring Specialisations and Advancement Opportunities

Like many healthcare professions, radiography offers the potential for career advancement and specialisation. Some of these include:

  • Mammography: Focusing on breast imaging
  • Radiology Nurse: Combining radiography with patient care skills
