PSP40416 is the nationally recognised Certificate IV in Government Investigations. It prepares you for work as an inspectors and regulatory officers. It has been the current version on the national register since 2016, when it replaced PSP41512. Employers posted about 1,174 inspectors and regulatory officers jobs in June 2026, down 1.5% on a year earlier.
The signals behind this qualification are mixed, and both sides are worth weighing. Specifically: employment in its occupations is projected to grow through 2035 and the official shortage list does not rate its occupations in shortage. Employer demand for these roles is holding steady. Across Inspectors And Regulatory Officers, about 1,174 jobs were advertised online in June 2026 (down 1.5% on a year earlier). Roughly 14,014 openings were advertised over the last 12 months, while 3,860 people enrolled in the qualification nationally in 2024. Enrolment counts people in training, not completions, so the two figures describe the pipeline and the market, not a job guarantee.
None of the occupations this qualification leads to is rated as in shortage on the official list. In the 2025 Occupation Shortage List assessment, Customs Officer, Immigration Officer, Motor Vehicle Licence Examiner, Invasive Pest, Weed and Disease Inspector, Social Security Assessor, Taxation Inspector, Train Examiner, Transport Operations Inspector, Water Inspector and Inspectors and Regulatory Officers nec are rated not in shortage.
Employment in these occupations is projected to grow. Government projections put them at 47,500 workers in May 2025, 49,000 by May 2030 (up 3.1%) and 50,800 by May 2035 (up 7%).
People who complete this qualification tend to do better than is typical for a Certificate IV. In the latest national outcomes survey (2025), 98.6% were employed or in further study after training, against a Certificate IV median of 89.9% across 71 qualifications. Median income after training was $102,600, compared with $63,400 typical at this level. 91.9% were satisfied with the training, against 87.8% typical.
Enrolments in this qualification are steady. National enrolments moved from 3,805 in 2023, to 3,860 in 2024 (up 1.4%).
