Who It’s For

Why Do This Course

Most Young People Need Both

The teenager in front of you is often unwell as well as unsafe. This pairing means you can meet both, not refer one away.

Two Diplomas, One Run

Shared units are studied once and counted twice. You finish able to work in youth services and in mental health services.

Long Enough to Belong

260 placement hours is a serious stretch inside a service. You stop being the student well before you finish.

Where The Skills Fit

Where This Can Take You

These are the roles that run youth services and support young people who are unwell. The college publishes a range of $60,000 to $100,000 a year, by experience, location and sector.

Youth Program Manager

Designing and running the programs young people show up to.

Youth Services Coordinator

Keeping a youth service joined up and pointed the right way.

Youth and Family Services Manager

Leading support that works with the whole household.

Youth Housing Support Manager

Keeping young people housed and steady.

Community Development Manager

Building programs with a community rather than for it.

Mental Health Outreach Worker

Reaching people who will not come into a service on their own.

Mental Health Rehabilitation Support Worker

Helping people get back on their feet after a bad stretch.

Roles where these skills are useful, not promised outcomes. Pay varies with experience, location and sector, and counselling roles ask for further study.

Good to Know

Common Questions

Do I need experience to enrol?

You do not need a certificate first. You need to be 18 or over, with the right to work and study in Australia. Your reading, writing and numeracy is checked at level 4. You also need sound computer skills, a laptop or desktop, and reliable internet.

How long does it take?

20.5 months for both diplomas. Study is self-paced, so you set the hours that suit your week.

What does it cost?

From $98 a week, interest-free. You can pay weekly, pay fortnightly, or pay upfront.

How does the work placement work?

Every eligible learner is placed in a supervised service before finishing. It is organised through the college's partner SkilTrak, within 30 km of home. You need 260 hours in a suitable workplace, across youth and mental health settings. It is an organised placement, not a job offer.

What do I need before placement?

A valid Working with Children Check or your state equivalent, and a police check, or the willingness to get one first.

How is the course assessed?

Written tasks, case studies, practical activities and demonstrations, work placement, and around 28 role plays based on workplace situations.

Why study both rather than one?

Because young people arrive with both. Shared units are studied once and counted toward both diplomas, which keeps the run to 20.5 months. You finish able to work in either service type.

Is this course nationally recognised?

Yes. CHC50425 Diploma of Youth Work and CHC53315 Diploma of Mental Health are both nationally recognised training, delivered by a registered training organisation, RTO 45162. You can view the registration at training.gov.au.

What if I change my mind?

Cancel before, or within 3 days of, being accepted and you get a full refund. After that point there is no refund.
