Module 1: Horticulture I
In this introductory module, you’ll learn how to identify plants and plant families, about pruning and landscaping, tree health and assessment and soil and plant nutrition. From water management and how to grow and maintain lawns, this module delivers a sound foundation into the world of horticulture.
Module 2: Horticulture II (Plant Knowledge)
This module is designed to further enhance your horticulture knowledge. You will explore the various groups of plants and where they are best used to successfully grow. From Australian natives to exotic ornamental, to indoor and tropical plants and bedding plants, you will discover what makes up these plant groups, how to grow them and how to care for them.
Module 3: Horticulture Ill (Plant Health)
This module is designed to deepen your understanding of plant health and effective management practices. It offers an introduction to plant health, including an overview of preventative controls and the use of insecticides and other pesticides. It delves into the details of spray equipment, insect biology, and fungal biology, providing comprehensive insights into combating various plant health issues. Additionally, it addresses environmental problems and diseases caused by viruses, nematodes, molluscs and crustaceans, equipping you with the knowledge to maintain healthy and thriving plant life in diverse horticultural settings.
Module 4: Natural Garden Design
This module will give students an insightful journey into the world of natural, wild, and bush gardens, ideal for aspiring garden designers. Beginning with an introduction to these styles, the module explores their history, and the development of concept plans that blend with the natural environment. Students will learn about choosing the right plants and mastering planting design to create aesthetically pleasing, sustainable natural gardens.
It covers the integration of garden features like water and stone that complement the natural landscape. It concludes with a comprehensive approach to combining all these elements, equipping students with the skills to create harmonious, environmentally friendly gardens that reflect contemporary natural garden trends.
Module 5: Biophilic Landscaping
The Biophilic Landscaping course enhances your understanding of the connection between outdoor environments and human wellbeing, focusing on the integration of nature into urban landscapes. It delves into the design considerations necessary for creating biophilic landscapes and exploring patterns and principles in urban design. It addresses the components of the landscape that provide services to people, affect individuals and how this influences environmental and climatic conditions. Additionally, the module guides you through assessing existing landscapes and integrating biophilic design into them, offering insights on working in and improving urban development with a focus on fostering a harmonious relationship between nature and urban living.
You’ll be fully supported with access to an allocated student support advisor, mentor and course consultants, who are available 5 days per week.
Assessments are an important part of your study journey as they help ensure you stay on track and meet the learning objectives of each lesson before moving on to the next. They also help your student support advisor and mentors identify where any further support may be required so that you get the most out of your course. You will learn via various methods; a combination of reading, undertaking research and watching videos. Assessments might include case studies, quizzes, and written assessments.
Upon completing the course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for each certificate completed and a Certificate of Completion.
