8 Life Skills Every Adult Should Master in 2020

No one is prepared for adult life. Transitioning from the easy routine of a teenager to taking on new responsibilities, there are many things that you will learn as time goes on.

So whether you have just left uni or you’re just about to start a job, here is a list of eight life skills that can help make your first steps into adulthood a little easier. Now, this isn’t a complete list by all means. But by mastering these, you will be off to a good start.

1. Time Management

Proper time management and setting some time to plan ahead is incredibly important for adults as there won’t be a time in which you aren’t juggling work and social/family events. You don’t want to feel constantly worn out. 

There are times you’ll be tempted to multitask. However, multitasking can be very counterproductive if not done correctly, making you feel overburdened with responsibilities. Instead, try to focus on one task at a time. Limit your hours scrolling through social media posts as well to avoid wasting your precious hours and increase productivity.

2. Being Happy Alone

If you’re an extrovert, you’re most likely used to being around people, whether they’re your family, friends or even officemates. However, as an adult, you have to accept that they couldn’t be there for you at all times. And thus, you have to learn how to handle things on your own, and also learn to be happy on your own.

Start with spend doing things you love alone on a specific day, whether that be going to the cinema to see the latest film, going to your favourite restaurant or heading out to your local museum. There’s something very refreshing about being in control of your calendar.

3. Cooking Meals

Don’t worry, we didn’t say you have to be Gordon Ramsay or some popular chef. We mean it’s ideal for you to learn how to cook and/or prepare your own meals both for survival and health reasons.

Having this skill is highly beneficial if you’re trying to watch what you eat since you’d know the ingredients and even the spices you add to your meals. 

4. Defending Yourself

This life skill isn’t dependent on physical threats but even some forms of emotional and/or psychological attacks. Of course your response would always vary depending on the case or situation but the key factor here is being aware of red flags being able to think rationally at all times.

For example, if it’s a physical assault, your response would be self-defense. On the other hand, if it’s some form of emotional abuse then don’t hesitate to cut off the person in your life.

5. Budget, Budget, Budget

Although it’s healthy to treat yourself from time to time, it’s never a good idea to sweep your entire paycheck the moment you get it just because you feel like you’ve worked for the money anyway. 

As an adult, you’ll have certain responsibilities – like paying for rent and other bills – so setting boundaries on your finances is a must. Never spend beyond your means and try to avoid debt as much as possible. Save a certain percentage from your salary as you’ll never what could happen next. It’s better to be prepared for the rainy days sooner than later anyways.

6. Waking Up On Time

When you’re younger, it doesn’t matter if you wake up five minutes before you have to leave the house especially if you live on campus. On the other hand, being an adult requires you to wake up on time for work to avoid getting deductions on your wage. Attendance can also be one of your employer’s ways to evaluate your commitment and work ethics so you really have to discipline yourself and start waking up on time.

If you have trouble dozing off fast, try doing something relaxing before you sleep. Take a bath or shower, do some meditations or read a book to hibernate your senses.

7. Making Friends

Being able to communicate with others comfortably and earning their trust is a great skill. You don’t need a gazillion of friends though – a handful of trustworthy ones is enough to keep you grounded and sane most times. However, if you’re a shy type of person or maybe you’re an introvert, sometimes it could be difficult for you to initiate a conversation but don’t let the shy bugs eat you up at work or in social events. 

When talking to new people, show interest in what they say. Also, when they ask you questions, answer as honestly as possible whatever it is you’re comfortable sharing you them. A shared interest or connection could a great start of a strong relationship.

8. The Art of Apologising

As an adult, you need to be able to apologise sincerely regardless of how shallow or serious your situation may be. It requires humility to admit one’s mistakes and keeping this in your set of values can also help you attract mature people and maintain harmonious relationships.
